My granddaughter was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum when she was about two. Autism affects how people communicate and interact with others. The way it affects those that have it, can range from some people being unable to communicate with words at all, to other people having trouble understanding certain social cues and behaviors.
My granddaughter is now a delightful 11 year old girl who is bright, funny, loves to tell jokes and loves interacting with people. We can thank my daughter for her tireless work with her and all the wonderful tutors we have had, who have helped her learn how to communicate in all kinds of settings. Not everyone is as lucky. Which is why it's important to help where possible. Autism now affects 1 in 68 children. Without intervention, many of these kids would become withdrawn, depressed, and unable to function. With help they can be part of a thriving world.
